RAY'S GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS
MOVO PHOTO MB200
CAMERA HOLSTER My FAVORITE non-optical camera accessory, and it's just $20! It all started when I went hiking with the standard camera strap and WHAM! As I leaned forward, my camera swung into a rock. Luckily, it only dented the lens hood. But this holster solves all of that and more! Super secure and with a safety strap, this is great for keeping your hands/body free while hiking. It's also great for shooting events - I've often had my secondary camera with a different lens on this holster while shooting my primary camera in my hands. |
MCOPLUS MK-VF2
LCD VIEWFINDER A cheap $40 tool that dramatically improves focusing ability with LiveView, especially in outdoor conditions. I love using this to magnify the LiveView so I can manually nail down the focus of every photo. Also built for four-eyed people like me. |
CANON 40MM F2.8 STM LENS
PANCAKE LENS A great starter lens! Most people recommend the "Nifty-Fifty" (Canon 50mm f1.8 Lens) as a starter lens, which is a good choice. But I liked the 40mm better because I liked getting more of the background included in my portraits. The 40mm also makes for a great travel/street photography lens due to its size - easy to pack and people around you are less intimidated when you're trying to take candid shots! |
ZOMEI ND2-ND400 VARIABLE ND FILTER
NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTER Neutral density filters are key in daylight shooting. It allows you to keep those apertures open for that maximum bokeh (background blur). 1-stop ND filters are slightly better quality, but variable filters give you maximum flexibility and easier to carry than a whole set of 1-stop ND filters. MAKE SURE TO SELECT ONE THAT MATCHES YOUR LENS'S FILTER THREAD. The brand linked here is from Zomei, the same brand as my variable ND filter. In my experience, this is the best of the low-end market, priced at less than $30. For maximum quality, I would recommend Hoya variable filters or Breakthrough single-stop filters. |
STEP-UP LENS FILTER ADAPTERS
9-PIECE SET Step up filter adapters are a great way to save money on filters, such as the variable ND filter listed above. Get a filter for your largest-sized lens (based on filter thread) and use the step up rings for your smaller filter thread lenses. (Be sure not to get the step down filters! Step down filters mount a smaller filter on a larger lens filter thread, which could cause vignetting.) |
